Presentation
of coaching
Definition
Coaching is the accompaniment of a person in a process of change.
The coach acts as a facilitator
of the evolution. He brings an external vision, takes the role of
an objective partner and allows the client to reach his objectives
more efficiently and quickly.
The origins of coaching
The Greek philosopher Socrate who "delivered the spirits"
by the art of interrogation was probably the first coach in history.
Actually, the movement developed in the Seventies when
the important mental aspect of sport became apparent. The interest
of this principle of accompaniment in all aspects of life quickly
appeared and the practice of coaching spread.
The development of coaching is certainly connected
to the fast evolution of our society. Until the beginning of the
twentieth century, the life of an individual was mapped out, his
destiny was more or less traced from his birth: most of his time
was used to fulfill his primary needs, his social and spiritual
life was clearly defined.
The growth of freedom and the increase of leisure time lead to
some kind of individualism. In our society, one must, henceforth,
be responsible for his/her own life, be able to make enlightened
choices and to assume them. Companies also have to face accelerated
change. They must react and adjust faster to an environment made
forever more demanding with the development of exchange and communication.
The objectives of coaching
The main objective of coaching is the development of the individual’s
potentials, of his/her autonomy and responsibility. The coach stimulates
awareness and adaptability and thus helps his clients to overcome
obstacles and to meet new challenges they are facing.
